WELCOME

Hello, I’m Dr. Shauna Cantwell.  Welcome to my new home on the web.  Your horses
and your pets are more than just animals.  Whether they are part of the family or
competitive athletes, they are always treasured.  When they are in need of well-being,
or care for illness or injury, you want a thorough and knowledgeable approach from
someone who can offer more than the basics and thinks outside the conventional
box.  My mission is to create a new and better medicine through comprehensive
care, research and education.

I have been a practicing veterinarian since 1989 in Canada, and broad experience
has brought me to this point in my career.  I started out as an equine/mixed animal
practitioner, specifically based on my extensive equine competitive background.  I
then spent a number of years in small animal general and emergency medicine (all
the while continuing to ride and show).  My interest in detail and physiology brought
me to specialize in Anesthesiology in 1998, with board-certification and a Masters
degree concentrating on respiratory physiology.  This phase of my development
created a strong focus in education, respiratory and neurophysiology, and pain
management. For more information, see
About Dr. Shauna  or my Curriculum Vitae
below.

With an extensive overall background in both equine and companion animal
medicine, and a need to expand further into the area of pain management, I began
studying eastern medicine, acupuncture and animal chiropractic.  Because of the
wondrous effects of these modalities on the body, and their ability to correct, balance,
and facilitate well-being (in addition to curing many illnesses), I felt the need to be
part of applying and expanding this kind of medicine.

So what do I actually do as a veterinarian?  With horses (and competition dogs) I
work with lameness and sports medicine in conjunction with a team of conventional
veterinarians, farriers, dentists, and trainers, applying multiple modalities and a keen
eye to restoring balance.  With dogs and cats, I also use acupuncture, electrotherapy,
chiropractic, homotoxicology, food and herbal therapy and rehabilitory techniques
among others to rebuild health through the immune system, as well as structurally.  I
help paralyzed dogs walk, asthmatic cats breathe, and dogs with cancer enjoy quality
of life.   An integrative medicine veterinarian has to know conventional medicine,
neurology and physiology as well as any other veterinarian, to be able to apply our
medicine thoroughly.  I welcome you to my website, and to my service to you and your
animals.  Please look through, enjoy the information, and let me help if I can be a
resource for you and yours.
